Zwanenburg Community Center

Halfweg (NL)

“A building with the contours of a village and the feel of a living room.”

A striking and sustainable building that unites public functions such as sports, socializing, recreation, and reading under a single spectacular wooden roof, inspired by the village roofs of the immediate area.

The building emphatically brings two worlds together: that of a park and a square. This is evident in the architecture, with the use of wood and stone materials, which complement both each other and the immediate surroundings.

This meeting place, offering sports, culture, and relaxation for all ages, connects the village center with the park, giving the Heart of Zwanenburg new meaning and allure. All spaces are visible and accessible from the spacious, centrally located “inner street,” which, together with the bar and waterfront terrace, forms an inviting communal living room.

Outside, a square paved with wall-to-wall carpet will feature various seating options, a water basin, and a small ornamental garden. This tree-lined pedestrian area offers flexible use, and allowing for small-scale events.

The community center is sustainably built and highly energy-efficient (EPC below 0 & GPR 8.1). By optimizing daylight and natural greenery, the entire building creates a noticeably pleasant and healthy indoor climate.
