Renovation and Redesign of Tivoli Vredenburg
Utrecht (NL)
The renovation and redevelopment of the old foyers surrounding the original hall of Muziekcentrum Vredenburg presented a unique challenge for the Architectencollectief deMunnik-deJong-Steinhauser. Much of Herman Hertzberger's original design had been lost over the years. This required a thorough approach to restore the original quality of the foyers and combine them with contemporary elements.
In 2023, Abbie Steinhauser and Bert de Munnik contacted us about using terrazzo as a bar cladding. The detailed drawings and model clearly demonstrated their envisioned application. Two colors were selected from the terrazzo of the dN3 series, complementing the overall color palette. The surface of the terrazzo was slightly sanded/roughened, making it easy to maintain and fitting the designers' aesthetic and visual wishes.
To cute the size the terrazzo and to install, we worked together with Jan Reek Graniet located Hoorn. Inter-Fact Interiors in Terborg built a total of six bars. These were delivered to the workshop in Hoorn, where all the terrazzo components were precisely cut to size. Assembly took place at TivoliVredenburg. A particular highlight is the mitered, glued, and rounded corners of the countertops. A true masterpiece!
In 2025, the renovation of the foyers of Muziekcentrum Vredenburg was completed with a new entrance at Vredenburgplein. With this renovation and redesign, the designers have reinstated Herman Hertzberger's design and original vision, while simultaneously inviting visitors to experience the building in a new way.
