Church of Leegkerk

Groningen (NL)

Renovation of the interior of the church of Leegkerk with a new education/exhibition room, a meeting room and facilitating areas in, on and around a golden cube that has been placed separately in the monumental church.

Central placement of the cube, separate from the walls, maximizes the spatial experience of the existing church space and defines functional zones. Above all, the cube had to become a jewel, a treasure box. Not to express the valuable content of the cube. But the other way around to value and reflect the environment in which the cube stands.

The golden color of the material, a copper-aluminium alloy, is the result of the search for a material that refers to ecclesiastical architecture, has a rich and warm character, that illuminates the space (by reflection and reflection), a material that reflects the pure and symbolizes value, carries something mysterious and has the power to attract and intrigue.
